Things to look out for:

The hummel x Aston Villa partnership was a truly legendary combination. At a time when football shirts were arguably at their peak, the tandem produced some stunning shirts in the classic colours of claret and sky blue.

In 1989, hummel had the unenviable task of creating the successor to the immensely popular 1987 Aston Villa home shirt (the recoloured Denmark ‘86 design), and they brought a number of strong features to the table. The hummel logo sat wonderfully in gold to match the shade on the Villa crest, and sky blue raglan sleeves offered a cleaner look in contrast to the previous design. An all-over subliminal pattern added just enough interest without detracting from the overall aesthetic, and hummel’s iconic chevrons were reimagined as both a fantastic collar detail, and a more reserved but no less beautiful smaller set on the sleeves.

Villa more than matched the greatness of their kit in 1989 with a 2nd place finish in the First Division, a remarkable achievement given their 17th place finish the previous season. It was their highest league finish since 1980, and it was a finish that’s only been matched once since then (the first Premier League season in 1992/93).
