But back in 1990-91, Howard Kendall built a team strong enough to pip United to fifth place in the old First Division.

Niall Quinn was voted player of the year at Maine Road that season, having bagged 21 goals in all competitions.

Although the late, great Kendall left City in November to return to Everton (he described Man City as his affair, and Everton as his marriage) after setting the wheels in motion for a solid season, midfielder Peter Reid was named player-manager.

Reid’s side included some seriously talented players, like Colin Hendry, Paul Lake, Steve McMahon and Tony Coton.
