Intro: This rare PSV shirt was only worn in a handful of matches, but its design embodies the strength of the legendary adidas x PSV era.
Condition details: The shirt is in top condition with no pulls or bobbles. Original labels are intact, and the colours throughout are bright. You’d struggle to find this particular shirt in better condition.
Things to look out for:
When you think PSV, you think stripes, but in the 80s PSV were virtually stripe free.
Though there were a smattering of pinstriped efforts, and a handful of Boca Juniors-style strips, the Dutch side hadn’t made use of the classic red and white stripes the team would later be associated with. In 1989, adidas shifted from the plain red affair of the previous season to a new red and white barcode look.
The shirt was notable not only for its design, but the fact the crest was placed on the sleeve of the shirt. Any fans of the kit were hard done by however, as the new look was only seen during pre-season and the first 4 games of the league campaign. Whatever the reason for reverting back to plain red, the abandoned 1989 home shirt had the last laugh in many ways as PSV later went on to adopt stripes full time.
Given the amount of barcode designs we’ve seen in the modern shirt game, this 1989 was very much ahead of its time in terms of aesthetic.
The number 8 shirt seen here was worn by popular winger Gerald Vanenburg, a Netherlands international who was part of the Euro 1988 winning squad.
