Things to look out for:
In the 80s, Rangers were making a comeback. Having gone title-less for the best part of the decade, The Gers turned a corner with a league title win in 1986. The new 1987 shirt from Umbro didn’t bring with it an immediate back-to-back league title, but in the following two seasons the 1987 shirt would be retained, marking the first 2 of 9 straight league championships.
Umbro were top of the pile in the late 80s and early 90s, and Rangers 1987-1990 shirt showcases exactly why. A subliminal checked pattern adds a masterful touch, whilst a grandad collar offers something of interest at the top of the shirt. But arguably the most symbolic element of this shirt was the sponsor.
1987 was the first year Rangers were sponsored by McEwan’s Lager. The earlier part of the 80s had seen both Rangers and their rivals Celtic sponsored by the same company, CR Smith, so the introduction of McEwan’s represented a clear break. Rather poetically, the team would go on to win several league titles with McEwan’s Lager on the front of their shirts, and the sponsor would go down as one of the undisputed champions when it came to team x sponsor combinations.
